In connection to the Tianjin massive explosions on 12 August 2015, suspects of the related cases were sentenced early November this year. Yu Xuewei, the chairman of Ruihai Logistics was convicted of illegal storage of hazardous materials, illegal business operations, causing incidents involving hazardous materials as well as bribery. Yu was sentenced to death penalty with reprieve, and a fine of RMB700,000. 25 other officials of related organisations were also sentenced for three to seven years.
According to the court, Yu and his staffs obtained the rights to operate and construct certain projects through illegal means such as bribery and fraud. They have illegally stored 49,000 tonnes of hazardous materials such as sodium cyanide since 2013. Along with violations to daily operation protocols, the Tianjin explosions were caused and eventually classed as “accident of extraordinary seriousness”.
The court also found that officials of government agencies including transportation, ports, customs, industrial safety, city planning and maritime affairs were guilty of dereliction of duty and abuse of power. These 25 officials were sentenced for three to seven years.
