Several students of the Pui Ching Middle School protested with banners on the China’s National People’s Congress deciding to “re-interpret” the Basic Law when former Secretary of Justice and current vice-chairperson of the HKSAR Basic Law Committee Elsie Leung visited the school on 8 November. The students posted a few images of their protest on Facebook page “Pui Ching Secrets”, expressing their opposition to the school’s decision to invite Leung, who is closely associated with the totalitarian government, as a guest and their contentions towards the NPC’s decision.
Explained in the Facebook post with the title “Reminisce our past, Right our paths”, the students criticised the NPC of modifying the laws of Hong Kong with the cover of “interpreting the Basic Law”, as a blatant act of insult to the consciences and wisdoms of the Hong Kong people. It is also clear to the students that such interpretation is an overstep and overriding the “one country, two system” as well as the independent judiciary system in Hong Kong.
The students also condemned Elsie Leung, while being the representative of Hongkongers in the Basic Law Committee, of pushing the rule of law in Hong Kong to brinkmanship in order to appease the Chinese communists. The students made the protesting decision when Leung was announced to be a guest to the school, to show their defiance to such CCP-appeasing person, and along with fellow teenagers of Hong Kong that they are enraged and disappointed to the NPC’s decision.
In the post, the students mentioned that the school has persevered through many rough times in history, and that the school has always taught the students to “be good and right” and say no to injustice. Hence they chose to say no to this interpretation of the Basic Law. They hope that fellow students and alumni would protect Hong Kong together in the future.
