Ah Lung, His Pelvic Fracture, the Police Who Inflicted It, and Those Who Don’t Seem to See

Any member of the public who happens not to have noticed what happened on Wednesday, 5 November 2014 in Mong Kok late at night may seek to be forgiven for not knowing the grievous injury the Hong Kong Police inflicted on unarmed and peaceful protesters during a sustained period of unprovoked and unjustified battery, where weapons such as expandable batons were used.

Next to no detailed coverage was provided by the mainstream media, which would rather not report on people who were nameless, faceless, and powerless—exactly the very people who are collectively the reality of which the Umbrella Revolution is their mimesis.

One of these people is Ah Lung, who after nearly 5 days in hospital still cannot feel his right leg, still feels pain in his hip, and still does not know the severity of his pelvic fracture, pending his MRI results due later today.

During an altercation late at night on Wednesday, 5 November, Ah Lung found himself surrounded by two circles of police officers, nearly two dozen in number, after his failed attempt to pull away a fellow protester who was being beaten up by other police officers. Unarmed and already crouching with no indication of intention to initiate or even resist any violence, he was brutally beaten up by 7 police officers for an unfathomably long time before being arrested and then taken to hospital.

Ah Lung still does not know whether he will be handicapped permanently, nor has he been charged by the police yet. He nevertheless has voiced his encouragement towards his fellow protesters, urging them to stay safe, stay healthy, and stay firm, for the Umbrella Revolution is going to be a “prolonged engagement.”
